The mission of the Michigan History Foundation is to raise private funds to help preserve and interpret Michigan’s history.

History

The Michigan History Foundation was established in 1989 by a group of  visionary business, industry, civic and political leaders to raise private funds from donors  interested in ensuring Michigan’s rich history, people and culture are are maintained to inspire generations today and in the future.

Today, the mission of the Foundation continues. We exist to present opportunities to provide the financial support needed to collect, preserve and interpret Michigan’s past for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations. Our efforts are aimed at providing Michigan’s citizens and visitors a view of those who’ve shaped our state, its people and culture, inspiring an enlightened and thoughtful citizenry.

The Foundation’s first major success was securing $1.3 million to complete the twentieth century exhibits at the state's museum, the Michigan Historical Museum. To date, the Foundation has raised over $7 million in private funds to support the  museum system, archival, publications, historic preservation and heritage educational projects and programs.

The Michigan History Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 relies on tax deductible contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations as a way to support Michigan history.
