The Michigan History Foundation is leading a fundraising campaign to support the Michigan History Center, part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Eastern Market Partnership in their efforts to rehabilitate and reopen the small Greek Revival home that President Grant and his wife Julia shared during the time they resided in Detroit.
Phase 1 (Complete)- Secure a new location, site preparation, home relocation
In 2020, with grant support from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the house was moved to its new permanent location at the corner of Wilkins and Orleans Streets in the Eastern Market District.
Phase 2 (In Progress)- Raise funds to complete rehabilitation, furnish the house and establish an endowment
Efforts are underway to raise the funds necessary to refurbish this storied home. The partnership needs to raise an additional $750,000 to rehabilitate the exterior and interior, provide furnishings, utilities, landscaping and updates to provide access for all future visitors.
Phase 3 – Comprehensive assessment, rehabilitate exterior and interior, install utilities and landscaping and collaborate with partners to determine future use
In addition to rehabilitating the exterior and interior of the 185-year-old home, the goal is to give it a new life. Once renovated, the goal is for the Grant House to serve as a public education and resource center. Programming, developed by historians and a diverse group of individuals and organizations in Detroit, will feature the Grants’ lives, including issues of slavery and freedom that still impact Detroit and its residents.
